John Badalament This is a live video clip that I shot from the front row at the U2 concert Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. The song, 'One,' rates as one of the greatest songs ever written. As with any work of art, the 'meaning' of this song is in the eye of the beholder; as a songwriter myself, however, I'm always intersted the artist's interpretation of his or her own work. In the case of 'One,' Bono has described it as being a father and son story. Specifically, he said in the interview I read, that 'One' is about a son struggling to tell his father that he (the son) has AIDS. Whether it's between a father & son, husband & wife, or boyfriend & girlfriend, to me, this song illicits powerful feelings of longing and love, hope and resignation, like none other. Below the video I have posted the lyrics. Incidentally, Bono is also the father of four children himself...more posts on this artist-dad to come...
One
Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier, now that you've got someone to blame?
You say, one love, one life, when it's one need, in the night
One love, we get to share, it leaves you baby, if you don't care for it...
Did I disappoint you, leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without
Well it's too late, tonight, to drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other...
Have you come here for forgiveness, Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus, to the lepers in your head?
Did I ask too much, more than a lot?
You gave me nothing, now that's all I've got
We're one, but we're not the same, well we hurt each other, and we do it again...
You say, love is a temple, love the higher law...love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter, and then you make me crawl
I can't be holding on to what you've got
When all you've got is hurt...
One love, one blood, one life, you've got to do what you should
One life, with each other, we're sisters, we're brothers
One life, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other
One...
